Hello from Bremen! I recently acquired a copy of a book called "Loss of the Sultana (and reminiscences of the survivors)", a reprint of a book originally published in 1892. It's a part of the "Voices of the Civil War" series published by the University of Tennessee Press. On page 80-81 there's a statement by Michael Brunner, saying he was born in Bavaria, Germany on January 25th, 1841, and enlisted in the Union army in 1861; was captured on September 19th, 1863, at the battle of Chickamauga; escaped several times from various prison camps, was recaptured, and eventually survived the explosion of the Sultana. He certainly had an exciting life! Best regards...

Hi Mike,
I got a copy of that book from Dan. I haven't quite finished reading it yet.
I also get the Sultana newsletters for survivors and descendants of the Sultana. A couple of years ago there was an article on Michael Brunner which was submitted by a distant cousin of ours.
Did Trina tell you about the blog? We are trying to capture the history of our family since so much was lost when your dad died and then my mom.
Any information you can post would be wonderful!
